SNOW DAZE :: Interlude in White

Crow at St. Peter's. On my way home I stopped by the cemetery to watch the snow coming into town.

The magic began to fall over Oxford on the afternoon of March 7th. and by early morning of March 8th., there was about an inch of snow at my location. This was just the joyful little event I needed to lift my spirits and bring out my inner child who seems to have been in hibernation for some months now. With cameras in tow and a tabby cat to keep me company, I made a morning of it. What great fun! Just the snow, me, Tabby, and the birds singing amongst the tree branches.

And so we end. The snow melted. The Snow Kitty disolved. All is a memory now. And when it was gone, it seemed like it never really happened.

Moments in time. . . could have missed these, but didn't. As a result, memories flow from them and fill my mind with flecks of glitter and perfumed air.

OCEAN SPRINGS HARBOR :: Night

These magnificent white birds settle down to roost at night in the trees across from the Shearwater Bridge. They look like little bright spots of light within the blackness of the branches. I had seen them there pre-Katrina but then even in Nov. after Katrina, they weren't there. This past Nov., I was thrilled to see them there that night I drove to the bridge! I parked and walked back up on the bridge, propped the Lumix on the railing and shot. What a treat!

Boats in OS Harbor

On the opposite side of the bridge is the Harbor and the boats were so beautiful sitting there in the quiet night. I could have stayed there all night just watching the colors, smelling the night air, and listening to the softness of the lapping water.

POST-KATRINA LIVE OAKS :: SPIRITS WITHIN

I have continued to photograph the post-Katrina Live Oaks every time I visit my beloved Mississippi Gulf Coast. I see the destruction that Katrina left behind on every visit and I am in continual awe of the power of that historical storm. If I could not find something positive within that destruction, I would not be able to continue on. I am determined to make my own form of lemonaid from the many lemons left in Katrina's wake, afterall, she ruined my dream, too. So, the search for the spirits within the living things of the earth is a quest for truth and beauty and hope eternal that all will be alright in the end.
And to that I add: "If a man walks in the woods for love of them half of each day, he is in danger of being regarded as a loafer. But if he spends his days as a speculator, shearing off those woods and making the earth bald before her time, he is deemed an industrious and enterprising citizen." – Henry David Thoreau

The Survivor

With this magnificent Live Oak in the background, there was a small group of Live Oaks that did not survive Katrina in a fenced area in the median of Beach Blvd. Dayton Scoggins was commissioned by Biloxi Mayor, A. J. Holloway to sculpt marine-related figures from the dead oaks. This particular shot has a Pelican with a fish dangling from its mouth. Hanging On

This thin-limbed sentinel stands outside of the fenced area which contains the Scoggins sculptures and overlooks that magical Gulf Coast water.

Beach Blvd. Spirits
This minimalistic oak was a stark image and I felt like it had something within that it wanted to say. Surviving Katrina was a tough ordeal. Surviving the prospect of being cut down by man, perhaps even tougher.

Waveland Oak with Birds
This very minimalistic and obviously once large and lush oak is still hanging on since I first saw it 2 years ago. However, there are still no signs of green leaves sprouting from the barren limbs. I see the angels and the birds, but no new growth.

REFLECTION PHENOMENON - Window Spirits

Window to the Soul

Reflection has several meanings, one of which is the following:
"the phenomenon of a propagating wave (light or sound) being thrown back from a surface."

This definition fits well the images that were thrown back to me from a series of upper windows while I walked down a city street in Tupelo.
